Honey is a browser add-on that helps shoppers save money by automatically finding the best coupon codes when checking out at an online store. Honey has had success promoting their application on reddit in the past, but recently they went to r/Bitcoin for feedback on a new idea.
Here is how they approached the Bitcoin subreddit:
The post ended up being one of the most upvoted posts ever to r/Bitcoin with loads of comments offering support for the idea. After the positive response from the r/Bitcoin community, Honey responded with this edit:
“Wow, we are floored by the feedback and the support. It looks like we’re going to have to build it or we might risk losing our kneecap. We’ll be putting the development plans in motion first thing tomorrow.”
This was an easy decision for the Honey developers. They went to their market and asked them for feedback directly. Reddit’s voting and comment system allowed them to easily determine that the community wanted what they were pitching. Now they have the luxury of developing a product knowing there is a customer base out there that will use it.
Do you have a business idea that needs validating?
Reddit is an excellent platform for validating a business idea, but be careful with your approach. Notice the way Honey titled their post and pitched the idea in the post. A key factor to the success of their post was promising to build the application if the community supported it. Without that promise, the post might have come off as “spammy”.
Also, note that Honey has a positive reputation among redditors due to a previous product they created and relationship they established with the reddit community.
Like the Honey developers, if you can develop a positive relationship with a subreddit related to your business, you can use reddit to validate business ideas.
