One of the most overlooked benefits of social media for any company/leader is the ability to observe and respond to discussions about you. What many don’t realize is that reddit is a hot bed for conversation and debate on every topic under the sun. If you have made a big enough splash in your market, redditors are likely talking about you. Read on to learn how to find mentions of your company on reddit and respond to them in a way that helps your customers and brand.
1. Find out who is talking about you
Search for your keywords on the reddit.com homepage (do not restrict search to a particular subreddit). If the results are too much to digest, you should first filter by “Top”, then by timeline, and then by subreddit. You can also search for reddit submissions that link to your website (Search “site:your_website_url.com”).
See our search of “nintendo” filtered by “top” and “today”…
We also searched for links to nintendo.com…
2. Join the conversation
Are redditors complaining about a user experience issue or a technical problem? Is someone asking for help and is need of support or clarification from a trained representative of your company? This is your chance to interact with those who are discussing your company, good and bad. Seek out submissions and comments that warrant a response and then submit a comment to help redditors understand you and your products better.
Here are a few comments that a Nintendo rep should respond to:
“seriously fantastic idea by Nintendo, I hope they advertise it on the box or something.”
How to Respond: “We aren’t putting this message on the box cover art, but there will be an insert inside with instructions on how to redeem your free downloadable game.”
“the software is just awful they have no convinient friend chat or voice chat”
How to Respond: “Nintendo is constantly working on ways to improve its software and these comments are very helpful. We have a few new social media integration features in the pipeline that will hopefully address this issue!”
3. Build Your Reputation
After spending ample time reading and responding to submissions, you should start to identify a few subreddits that are especially fertile marketing ground for your company. Once you have established what subreddits you need to follow, keep up to date with them on a weekly basis. You will start to find opportunities to jump into the conversation even if the submission doesn’t mention your company or product.
After you have established yourself as a member of a reddit community, you can submit posts that request feedback request other valuable information from the community.
